Minutes from the Quarterly Congregational Meeting, 10. December 2017
First Christian Church/Disciples of Christ, Albany, Oregon
The meeting was called to order by Kris McLaughlin, who opened with a prayer. Kris announced the resignation of Maura Wilson, the co-chair who would be moving into Kris’s place and the recommendation of the Executive Team and the Board that Kris continue for another year for the sake of continuity and congregational memory.
The Nominating Committee’s slate of officers was presented. It was approved by a unanimous vote. (Ann Magruder’s motion; Sharon Gisler’s second)
The Proposed Budget was presented and some discussion ensued. The budget was then approved by unanimous vote (Ethel Ellingson’s motion; multiple seconds)
Tim presented some information about building safety in the wake of the church shootings and mentioned ALICE, the research-based program advocated by our Insurance Board. More information will follow for the congregation.
Laura Lambeth presented the thinking and actions that have taken place regarding restroom use and signage. At present only the men’s room off the fellowship hall has been changed. It is now a single-use non-gender-specific restroom with a door that can be locked. The next restroom for consideration is the women’s room off the fellowship hall. No changes have been made, but discussion will be taking place. People are encouraged to express their opinions and concerns to church leaders and Board members-at-large.
Douglass Anne presented the children’s Sunday morning program for the next few months. Children will be in worship three weeks running and then upstairs for three weeks of activities. That way they have experience with worship as well as Sunday School. She will be recruiting people to help upstairs and for hosts to help guide children who need a little help navigating the time they spend in the sanctuary.
Tim shared that the Shepherds’ program is in place in a limited way and looking to expand over the months to come until ultimately, each congregant will have a shepherd keeping watch. The keeping watch will vary with the style of the shepherd and the sheep, so it may look different for different people.
Tim also shared some educational focus possibilities for the year. Programs are in the works on LGBTQ+ issues, poverty, and aging and spirituality. Other suggestions are welcome.
Kris reminded people to read the communication from the church that comes in the mail and email. Some concerns were raised about emails possibly getting sidetracked into computer filters, and individuals who for some reason have been dropped from the mailing lists. We will need to replace our prayer chain director because Debbie Burchfiel is moving away and vacating that spot after serving us well .
The meeting was closed with a prayer and adjourned.
